The mural “Multicultural Balance” by RUBEN SANCHEZ in Mannheim
When it comes to interpreting the motif, SANCHEZ wishes to offer only a few hints, not a definitive guide. Rather, he wants each viewer to discover the image for themselves, piece by piece. But this much can be said: The bicycle and the music are a metaphor for balance. They stand for tolerance, respect, and understanding—in Mannheim and throughout Europe. “We are walking backwards,” says RUBEN SANCHEZ in reference to the current, growing pressure from the right. What Europe needs right now, he says, is balance. Only when all the musicians in a band pay attention to one another can harmony and melody emerge. The three figures embody different identities, nationalities, and characters. The bicycle symbolizes moving in the same direction. Only when everything is in balance can we move forward.
